Academic degrees

Bachelor of Arts in Social Science, University of Stockholm ("Socialinstitutet"), Sweden.

Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa at the University of Guelph, Canada.

Early Occupations

A number of positions as a Social Worker in the early part of the fifties. Employed as a Researcher by the Liberal Caucus in the Swedish Parliament 1957 - 61. Editorial Writer at "Dagens Nyheter" (a major Swedish daily) 1962-64.

Elected Offices and Political Appointments

Member of the Swedish Parliament (Stockholm)1964-1983. Leader of the Swedish Liberal Party 1978-83. Minister for International Development Co-operation 1976-78. Minister of Immigration 1977-78. Prime Minister 1978-79. Minister of Foreign Affairs (with International Development Co-operation) 1979-83.

Diplomatic Posts

Ambassador to Canada 1983-89 and to Italy 1989-96.

Forest Oriented Commitments

Chairman of a Working Group on "Global Deforestation Trends" appointed by the InterAction Council 1987. Co-chairman of "The European Forum for Forest Protection" 1988-1990. Co-ordinating member of a Review Team on the "Tropical Forest Action Plan" appointed by FAO 1990. Co-chairman of the independent "World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development" since 1995.

Others

Member of the "InterAction Council" which is a think tank of some 30 former Heads of Government and State, 1983-1999

Member of the Board of Directors of the Woods Hole Research Center, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA.

Senior Fellow at the Internaitonal Institute for Sustainable Development, Winnipeg, Canada since January 2000.
