  • Deputy Director General for Environmental and Socio-Economic Research at the Federal Ministry for Education and Research in Bonn/Berlin/Germany since 1998.
  • Chair of the International Group of Funding Agencies for Global Change Research (IGFA) since 2000.
  • Training in law and political science in Berlin, Bonn and at LSE London.
  • Counselor at Federal Chancellor's Office 1971–74.
  • Civil servant in Federal Ministry for Research and Technology (BMFT), e.g. as Head of Cabinet with 3 Ministers from 1974 onwards.
  • On leave as Director for Research at the Senate of Berlin 1977–79 and as Central-Secretary at headquarters of the Social-Democratic Party 1985–87.
  • Since 1987, back in Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF, new name after 1994) with different responsibilities reaching from national labs, IT-policy and EU-R&D-framework to socio-economic sciences, technology assessment and science policy studies.
