Dr. Maritta Koch-Weser
has been appointed recently as CEO of GEXSI – the Global Exchange
for Social Investment. GEXSI serves Social Entrepreneurs and Social
Investors worldwide. It is supported in partnership by a group of
private and public sector sponsors. Dr.
Koch-Weser is also Founder and President of Earth3000, an international
non-profit organization based in Germany. Earth3000 supports innovations
in governance for environment and development.
During her earlier career,
Dr. Koch-Weser worked at the World Bank, where she was closely associated
with the build-up of environmental and social programs and policies.
In her most recent assignment she was Director for Environmentally
& Socially Sustainable Development for the Latin America &
Caribbean Region. Subsequently, she served as Director General of
IUCN – The World Conservation Union.
Dr. Koch-Weser’s
field experience in international development spans the regions
of Latin America, South & East Asia, West & East Africa,
parts of the Middle East, Eastern Europe & countries of the
Former Soviet Union.
Dr. Koch-Weser
holds a Ph.D. from the Universities of Bonn and Cologne. She taught
Anthropology and Latin American Studies at George Washington University
in Washington D.C., and carried out extensive
field research in Brazil.
