Mr Pekka Haavisto
Former Minister for Environment and Development Cooperation, Finland

Mr. Pekka Haavisto is a former Environment and Development Co-operation Minister for Finland and a key figure in the United Nations Environment Programme post-conflict environment assessments. He has been chairing scientific missions to investigate the environmental impact of recent conflicts in the Balkans, and he has been invited to prepare similar post-conflict environmental missions to Afghanistan.

He has been a Visiting Researcher at the Finnish Institute for International Affairs and for Spring 2002 he has been invited to the University of Bristol as a Benjamin Meaker Visiting Professor on Global Environmental Politics. He is an adviser to United Nations Secretariat of the Convention to Combat Desertification and to Heinrich Böll Foundation for the Johannesburg 2002 WSSD Summit.

Mr. Haavisto is the Spokesperson for the European Federation of the Green Parties, EFGP. He was the minister of the environment and development co-operation in Finland 1995-99, and member of Finnish Parliament 1987-95. Mr. Haavisto was one of the co-founders of the Green Party of Finland, and was the chairman of the Finnish greens 1993-95. His special interests are foreign policy and global environmental issues.
