Clive Butler

Corporate Development Director, Unilever, UK

Clive Butler joined Unilever in 1970 as a management trainee at Van den Berghs & Jurgens Limited. During the next seven years, he held a number of marketing positions, all in the Consumer Products Divisions of the company.

In 1977, Butler joined Unilever's Central Marketing Division as head of the brands/markets section relating to food and in 1979, was appointed marketing director of Lever Brothers in Rhodesia, which later became Lever Brothers Zimbabwe.

In 1982, he was appointed vice chairman and marketing director of Philippine Refining (now Unilever Philippines), becoming chairman and president of the company a year later. In 1986, he was appointed president of the Foods Division of Lever Brothers USA.

Butler became president of Van den Bergh Foods, USA, in 1989 and then joined the Foods Executive in Rotterdam in 1990 as group executive in the Meals & Meal Components Division. In 1992, he was elected to the Boards of Unilever PLC and NV and appointed corporate development director. He also assumed responsibility for Information Technology Group. In January 1993, he was appointed personnel director and regional director for Europe.

In 1996, he was appointed category director, Home and Personal Care, and a member of the Executive Committee. Butler was appointed a non-executive director of TSB Group PLC in 1993 and subsequently of Lloyds TSB Group PLC in 1995. He took up his current position in August 2000.

Clive Butler is married with two children.
