Dr John Skerritt Deputy Director, Research and Development, Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research Dr John Skerritt was appointed Deputy Director of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) in May 1999. The ACIAR is an Australian Government statutory authority established in June 1982. ACIAR's mandate directs it to mobilize Australia's research capacity to help solve agricultural research problems of developing countries. The Centre brings together research institutions in Australia and partner developing countries to work together on problems of mutual interest and benefit, in fields in which Australia has comparative advantage. Dr Skerritt has overall responsibility for an annual project budget of over $30 million and a team of senior managers involved in designing and managing collaborative research projects in a range of agricultural disciplines, including crop sciences, animal sciences, fisheries, forestry, land and water resource management, post-harvest technologies, and agricultural economics. Dr Skerritt also directly manages a portfolio of short-course and postgraduate training. Dr Skerritt is a University Medallist and B.Sc., Ph.D. graduate of the University of Sydney, and was a Rotary Foundation Fellow at the University of Michigan, USA. His research training and initial research experience was in medical research, although he has worked in agriculture since 1983. Prior to joining ACIAR, Dr Skerritt held joint appointments as Research Program Manager in the Australian Quality Wheat Cooperative Research Centre, and a Senior Principal Research Scientist in CSIRO. Dr Skerritt is the author of over 250 research publications in international journals, editor of 3 books and 10 patents/patent applications and several scientific reviews. His research has covered several broad areas of agricultural, food, and environmental science. Dr Skerritt has been the recipient of several awards for his contribution to science and science management, including the Edgeworth David Prize of the Royal Society (1993), the Murex Diagnostics award (1994), the Neville Percy Prize (1984) and the Wasserman Prize in Biotechnology of the American Association of Cereal Chemists (1999).
