One Sun One World
Background Note
Solar energy is seen globally as one of the most important element of transition to clean and affordable energy. India is currently implementing one of the largest renewable energy programmes globally. The cumulative installed capacity of RE power in India has already reached above 90 GW (November 2020), which is in addition to large hydroelectric capacity of 45.4 GW. India’s Prime Minister recently called for connecting solar energy supply across borders, with the mantra of 'One Sun One World One Grid' (OSOWOG). The vision behind the OSOWOG mantra is “The Sun Never Sets” and is a constant at some geographical location, globally, at any given point of time. With India at the fulcrum, the solar spectrum can easily be divided into two broad zones viz. far East which would include countries like Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Lao, Cambodia etc. and far West which would cover the Middle East and the Africa Region. This is one of the most ambitious program undertaken by India and is of global significance in terms of sharing economic benefits.MNRE and The World Bank jointly developing a vision, implementation plan, road map and institutional framework for implementing “One Sun One World One Grid”. The plan would focuses on a framework for facilitating global cooperation, building a global ecosystem of interconnected renewable energy resources mainly solar sources of electricity, including decentralized systems such as rooftop solar systems, on a global platform that can be seamlessly shared.
EDF led consortium with TERI and AETS is implementing on this important initiative with a view to develop long-term vision including an actionable plan and roadmap beside the foundation of an Institutional framework for implementation by addressing the technical challenges, potential benefits, economic viability and environmental impact.
