New Delhi, Oct 7: Senior Environmental journalist Nitin Sethi, who has covered several climate change negotiations, takes a sceptical view of the implementation of the agreements ratified so far by countries.
During an interaction with scribes during the Media Colloquium at the ongoing World Sustainable Development Summit here, Nitin Sethi said that though a lot is expected from the Paris Agreement, the countries that ratified it are yet to come up with a concrete plan on how to implement the agreement that will come into force in 2020.
"Simply ratifying the Paris Agreement means nothing until the countries start working upon implementation part," he said. "While Paris Agreements and the likes of it have come into force with the sole aim of mitigation of climate change, big players like United States, United Kingdom have always had an advantage over the developing countries of Asia and Africa in terms of policy-making," he added.
Sethi, who is a senior associate editor at Business Standard, was interacting with journalists at the Media Colloquium in the four-day-long World Sustainable Development Summit 2016 that is underway in New Delhi.
Though he raised doubts over a proper mechanism to check the accountability and transparency of climate finance and its utilisation towards meeting the desired objectives, he also added that it would be a radical stand to completely dismiss the Paris Agreement. While it had its flaws, he said it has brought together countries which are the major players in climate change within its periphery.
He also shared with journalists many tips on how to cover issues relating to environment.
