The 27th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) is scheduled to be held from 7–18 November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. COP27 will bring together countries, companies, civil society, and citizens on a common platform to work towards a more sustainable future through adaptation, mitigation, finance, and collaboration.
The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and TERI School of Advanced Studies, India in collaboration with New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Japan and Indigenous Information Network (IIN), Kenya is organizing a UNFCCC official side event at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, titled, “Climate Action through Innovation, Implementation and Inclusive Multi-level Governance” on 16th November 2022 (Wednesday), at 11:30-13:00 (EEST) [3:00 – 4:30 PM (IST)] in Akhenaten Room in the Blue Zone.
Climate change is the biggest threat facing humanity in the current times. For urgent climate action, addressing issues in and beyond national jurisdictions is crucial. Policy areas such as carbon neutrality, climate stabilization, global commons, nature, indigenous communities, lifestyles, and gender should be looked at from the lens of innovation, implementation and multi-level governance approaches. This event will bring diverse perspectives from developed and developing countries, as well as from different stakeholders.
hrough this side event, TERI will present and launch two policy briefs on ‘Global Commons and Ocean-climate Interface’, and ‘Internationalizing Lifestyles for Environment’, which are being prepared as part of the activities under COP27 Compass and SDG Charter components, respectively, of the Act4Earth initiative. The Act4Earth initiative was launched at the valedictory session of the 2022 Edition of the World Sustainable Development Summit and is a knowledge initiative of TERI that aims to bring forward issues on climate action and sustainable development goals from the perspectives of the Global South through activities such as policy briefs and stakeholder dialogues.
Key questions that the session will address include:
- What innovations will drive urgent, rapid, and large-scale measures in climate change mitigation and adaptation?
- What paradigm shifts are needed in global processes on climate change especially keeping in mind the upcoming global stocktake process?
- How can multi-level governance approaches be promoted involving individuals, communities, institutions, governments, and markets?
- What is the role of indigenous communities and knowledge? How can indigenous solutions be upscaled and voices be brought to the mainstream discourse?
